Umborne Ug & Summer BBQ report:
(to enlarge photos, left click on them once and then once again)
If you were in East Devon on Saturday evening, you would have noticed how fantastic the weather was – warm, sunny and later on, calm – a little too warm for runners perhaps, but perfect for spectators and barbecuers alike.
Our annual 10k run up over the hills ( yes, there were a few of those!) and out towards Widworthy was supported by 91 runners both local and distant. The 2.5k Fun Run over 2 laps around Umborne Hall attracted a record 46 runners of all ages. In addition at 5pm just under 20 walkers, many with dogs of all shapes and sizes had set off on a 4 mile country walk. Entry to these 3 events was by donation and we collect an amazing £622 from these great (or crazy?) athletes.
The course was marshalled by a great team of 15 volunteers with a water station at halfway ( thanks Bill & Linda Marshall). Chris and Paul did the back-marking and course clearing. Our thanks also to all the landowners who allowed us to run over their land. Parking was in the field next to the hall thanks to the Bird family.
Results: The Ug 10k was won by Axe Valley Runners’ ( AVR) Tim Lenton in a new course record of 39m 29s, beating the previous record by over a full minute.
Second was AVR’s Matt Clist in 40.58 and third was AVR Chairman Garry Perratt in 42.46.
In total over 30 AVR’s supported this event. First lady home in 15th overall was Hannah Brown (nee Dupain) of Exmouth Harriers, her first running of this event, with a time of 49.56.
2nd was AVR’s Kate Vine in 53.23
and 3rd Honiton RC’s Judy Davey in 54.15.
Age Categories: M40+ Mike Musgrove,
50+ Steve Davey
and 60+ Robin Britton. F35+ Emma Parris, 45+ Tess Stone
and 55+ Lesley Westgate.
The jugs for the 2 winners were made by our local potter Gilly Humphries-Lea-Cox.
The Fun run was won was won by Nathan Williams in 11.01, with 2 local boys, Ross & Jack Broom 2nd and 3rd in 11.13 and 11.52.
First girl home was 7yr old Darcie Morton in 15.12, 2nd was a very local girl Ella Shepherd in 16.14 and 3rd Isla Bryson in 16.23.
Our thanks to the team of time keepers and results’ recorders. Our medical cover was kindly provided by Dr. David Trenchard.
Our Summer Barbecue took place at the same time and what a great turn-out there was, what with our locals and all the runners and their families.
The bar, with a barrel of Otter Amber donated by Axe Valley Runners and sorted out by Andy Bowman, was very popular. Geraldine, Teresa, Kimmo and Tony plus others helped the bar make a profit of £246 – thank you all those helpers.
Neville, Sue, Rodney, Angela and Antonia had a very busy evening on the 3 barbecues – burgers and hotdogs etc. were served with a napkin and a smile – and the sum of £277 was raised. Well done our team of cooks – We were going to say Chefs, but…..!! Inside the hall Liz, Margaret, Phyllis and Chris served hot drinks and delicious cakes made by our local friends, some of whom couldn’t make it on the evening but wanted to support this venture.
Thank you one and all – a profit of £185 was made here.
Many other people helped in so many ways – if we have missed you out, our apologies. For example, some locals helped make sure that the barrel went back to the brewery empty!
In total the magnificent sum of £1,125 was raised for the hall funds. How good was that? Many thanks – Eleanor & Rick
