Churchyards provide a sanctuary for wildlife, with little disturbance from people and a range of different mini-habitats. Mature trees along churchyard boundaries have a ‘woodland fringe’ feel, providing nesting and shelter for birds such as Long-tailed Tits, Goldcrests and Chiff-chaffs. East Devon AONB : “Back to the future..”

Hi all
A number of you may have already seen the short 12 min intro film to old film footage we at the AONB team sourced from a number of individuals across East Devon, like Mary Thomas. In return for digitising the film from contributors, we were able to keep snippets of footage for use on the web
(follow the links from our work to back to the future from the eastdevonaonb.org.uk homepage) and to create this outstanding 40 minute film to show.

Monday June 4th  2.00pm  Shute School – The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration for all the family with games, music, bouncy castle, stalls, may-pole dancing, picnic ( bring your own food and drink).
Saturday June 9th  6.00pm – Umborne Hall – “The Umborne Ug” – an annual 10k run, 2.5k fun run and 5 mile walk (5.00pm) followed by an evening BBQ.
Saturday 30th June  2.00pm  Penventon, Shute ( home of the Goslings) “Steam Up”
cream teas, rides on Tony’s miniature steam train, stalls and family fun.

Woody’s 8  – run and walk

April 29th at 11.00 am
Starting from the hall, Woody’s 8 was a low key, informal multi-terrain run/walk of around 8 miles. It consisted of mainly footpaths and tracks, with some short road sections. With an easy route to follow, it took you around Shute woods and returns back with the finish at the hall – all of this designed by Geoff Woodward.
A route card was  issued on arrival. All the tricky sections were  clearly marked on the course. There was also be a help-yourself water stop on the route …

Weather report for March 2012:

March 2011 had  surprised us all with remarkable dryness
(23.1mm on 6 rain days) and a record high maximum temperature of 19.5C
on 25th. Now 2012 has gone several stages further with a total rainfall
of 19.9 mm with recordable falls again on just six days. But the spell
of warmth from 24-30th gave a whole week of higher maxima than the
figure reached last year. The sequence is, starting on March 24th: 20.0;
20.8; 21.5; 21.0; 23.3; 21.0 & 19.8C. The average daytime high …
