Umborne Ug 2011

The Umborne Ug 2011

Over the last few years, many of you have been involved in this annual event, starting and finishing at Umborne Hall.

The date this year is Saturday 11th June at 6.00pm. – please note the different day and time.

The Umborne Ug is a 10k race which attracts runners from far and wide to enjoy the undulating delights of our East Devon countryside. The main 10k run (over 16’s only) starts at the hall at 6.00pm. This is followed at about 6.10pm by a 2.4k Fun Run which is mostly on road (and it is flat!)  near the hall. This is for over 8’s only please.
The whole event is well supported by Axe Valley Runners who also help mark out the route.

If you are not too keen on running – and many of us aren’t ! then there will be an organised walk which sets off from the hall at 5.00pm. Just like the runners, this is an opportunity to venture over private land which 6 different landowners have kindly agreed to. The route takes you up through Home Bush woods with some superb views.
Dogs are permitted but please keep them on leads until you get into the woods at Home Bush. There is a water station at the half way point for the runners. Walkers can take their own preferred beverages with them! The route is well signed and marshalled. Which brings us on to the next point:

Marshals wanted please!

To make this event function smoothly and to enable us to acquire the necessary permit, we have to position about 12 marshals out on the course – not for too long, as most runners and walkers should be back at the hall by 7.15 at the very latest. If you can help out with the marshalling – some for only a few minutes, others out on their quad bikes in the distant realms near Widworthy, please let us know asap – many thanks.

Registration for the walk is from 4.30 to 5.00pm and from 5.00 to 6.00pm for the runners and Fun runners. There is no entry fee as such but donations from walkers and runners are most welcome and all money raised goes towards the hall funds.

When you get back to the hall, whether you are running, walking , marshalling or just there to support and encourage all the runners and walkers, there is a grand Barbecue with a Bar and also hot drinks and amazing locally-baked cakes.
This is meant to be a whole family event so please try and get involved in some way or another. There may be the opportunity for some to camp in the field next to the hall. It is most enjoyable especially if the weather is kind to us. We need people to bake cakes, serve them and the hot drinks, bar people, BBQ chefs and of course marshals and water station helpers. The rest can just cheer, applaud or scream with encouragement as the exhausted runners return to the hall. The awards ceremony – with trophies hand-crafted by our very own potter Gilly – will be at about 7.30.

Last year the race was won by Garry Perratt (41.00), 2nd Alex Todd (43.05) and 3rd Luke Reed (44.29) – all from Axe Valley Runners. The first lady home was Judy Davey of Honiton RC (54.46) 2nd Paula Isaac of North Devon RR (54.50) and 3rd Alexandra Cutts (54.50).
The Junior Fun Run was won by Cameron Souter-Frost (11.41) and the first girl home was Lydia Clapp (12.43).

Please come along with the whole family, your friends and neighbours and make this the best Ug ever ! Thank you one and all.
