October 2009

The Autumn Supper, held in the hall on Saturday 17 October, turned out to be a full house, with about 86 people of all ages attending. Most of us have never seen the hall so full, so thanks to all who came. We even had to move poor Tony Gosling away from his usual place for the Raffle but that did not stop him raising a most impressive £146 on the raffle.

The table quiz/word game was won by the Wright family foursome who managed to get most of the “right” answers, totalling a superb 64 out of a possible 72. Joan is clearly on my wavelength – hopefully not Simon anyway!

Liz Gosling managed to produce an exceptional meal as usual and was aided by so many willing volunteers who helped set out the hall, distribute the food and wash up afterwards – our thanks to them and also to the dozen or so amazing cooks who produced such scrumptious puddings.

We raised the magnificent sum of £700 for the hall funds – more than we have ever made before – and had a most enjoyable evening as well. Well done Liz.

As you will have been informed in a previous email from Geoff Elliott, the Community Council of Devon, acting on behalf of Devon County Council, has awarded us a grant of £24,000, which means that we can now plan a new building to replace our current hall now reaching the end of its useful life. There is still much to be done, including a huge amount of money still to be raised. Our Trustees will keep you informed about how progress can be made and how the community as a whole can be involved.

Our next event is the children’s Christmas Party in the hall on Saturday, 5 December, between 3 and 5 pm. Invitations will be sent out in November. Ann Shepherd, with help from others, has kindly agreed to organise this event, replacing Angela, Gill and Sheila who have done the job so well and enthusiastically for so long – our thanks to them for all their efforts over the years.

Some important dates for your diary: 12th Night Supper – Saturday 9 January 2010 The Grizzly – Sunday 7 March 2010 (we hope to supply a huge number of marshals and receive a very generous donation – £750 last year!) Theme Night – last one in the hall? Mid-to-end of March, date to be confirmed soon. Umborne Ug – Sunday 9 May 2010

Finally, our thanks to Neil Shepherd for the amazing work he has done on our new website: www.umborne.org

If you haven’t had a look already, I recommend that you log onto it now and have a look at the content already there. It will amaze you how much progress has been made, considering work has been going for only a couple of months. This is a community website and we are looking for a huge input from you all – whether it is articles, photographs or even advertising your business. If you have any ideas, please contact Neil, Geoff, or, Rick.
