Short Mat Bowls at Whitford

Short mat bowls became official in November 1989, although the beginning really started in 1988 when Devon Sports Council launched Action Sports to encourage the older population to “get off your armchairs?” By fund-raising events such as Table top sales, concerts by Tina and the Corry Dale singers and jumble sales etc. we were able to purchase our own mats and other equipment in April 1991, at a staggering price of over £1000, thus saving Action Sports the need to bring their equipment to Whitford. …

December Weather Report

Weather in December
This was quite the mildest December since before 2005. My
records are not complete enough before that year to say for sure, but it
looks as if December 2003′s temperature was higher than 2011. My lowest
figure in December 2011 was -2.9C on the 18th, which also gave the
lowest day maximum of the month at 7.5. In December 2003 the lowest
reading was -1.9C. Last month, the average maximum temperature was
slightly over 11C; the minimum just under 3C, giving a mean of 7C.
Overall, this December was …

Children’s Christmas Party 2011

Despite this year having clashes with lots of other events, we still had 33
children attending. Once Paddy Magrane found the right cable (bless him),
musical chairs kicked off the party with young Maeve Wright winning with a
teeny bit of help from Jess Fuzzard.

The second round was a well deservedwin by Jamie Porter, this being his first visit to the hall. Pictionary proved to be very competitive again with some excellent deciphering of the
children’s artwork. A little bit of cheating  from Di’s team by starting …

November Weather 2012

‘If November has to come, let it be November 2011′.
Personally, I have never liked November; the gathering
darkness, continual dampness and the first cold, dismiss any hope of
pretending that summer times still linger. But this year, ‘wow’. The
mildness has been quite extraordinary, with day maxima still reaching
17C as late as the 13th, and over 16C on the 18th.  My average maximum
temperature for the month was just over 14.7C, which would have been
good if it had been April. There were two light air frosts, the …

Harvest Supper 2011

We had a hugely successful Harvest Supper on Saturday 22nd of October
with 65 of us gathered in the hall for a wonderful meal ( thanks Liz & and all those people who contributed something salad-wise or in the pudding department.)  What a banquet!

The table quiz of pictures and anagrams was won by the super-intelligent Trenchard family with a tiny bit of help from Bandy Woman (anagram!).

The raffle prizes seemed to be the best ever – hence a profit of £138  – well done …
