The first Shute Festival of Literature and Landscape proved a huge success, drawing over 200 visitors to two days of stimulating and inspiring talks, film showings, workshops and discussions.

The festival, which took place over the weekend of 29th and 30th October, brought together an eclectic range of speakers, ensuring visitors enjoyed a rich variety of topics in the intimate and beautiful surroundings of Shute Church, lit professionally for the occasion by Axe Valley student Jed Holmes, of Simply Stage.

We ended up with a full house of 68 people and had a most enjoyable evening. Each table had a food box of 4 different cheeses, pickles, coleslaw, potato salad, pickled onions, 2 sorts of pate and bread and biscuits to share and for pudding there was apple crumble! Thank to all those people who prepared the food and served and cleared.
There was an autumn photo competition, judged by John Coe, which …

Antonia and Angela sorted out all the duck races including the finale …

This annual event held at Penventon in Shute

– the home of Tony & Liz Gosling is usually held in fine weather. This year we were treated to the sunniest and hottest ones of recent years.

Our numbers were slightly down this year partly because there were lots of other events taking place on the same day but also because, as it was the sunniest and hottest Saturday of the year so far, many families …

Umborne Ug and Summer BBQ 2013

Umborne Ug & Summer BBQ report:

(to enlarge photos, left click on them once and then once again)

If you were in East Devon on Saturday evening, you would have noticed how fantastic the weather was – warm, sunny and later on, calm – a little too warm for runners perhaps, but perfect for spectators and barbecuers alike.

Our annual 10k run up over the hills ( yes, there were a few of those!) and out towards Widworthy was supported by 91 runners both local and distant. The 2.5k Fun Run over …

November Weather Report 2012

November 2012.
The first eighteen days of the month, other than one, 3rd, were actually quite dry, perhaps a little cooler than average, with a few light frosts, with a predominance of winds from the NW. A swing round to a SE wind on the 14th brought the month’s
highest temperature of 16C. This was about five degrees above average, but last year’s mild month brought a higher reading four days later, and this year’s highest was the lowest, (if that makes sense) since 2008.
The last …

Devon Libraries Mobile Library Service

Each year Devon Libraries review the Mobile Library timetables to ensure that each village’s stop is safe, well-used, and that the vehicle has enough travelling time between stops to reach their borrowers promptly. The Mobile Librarians also consult their borrowers to see how we can tailor the service to the community’s needs.
As you will be aware the Mobile Library currently stops in Shute Barton on alternate Thursdays at the School from 11.15 –  12.00. The Mobile Librarian has consulted the borrowers and as …
