Race Night Profit

We held a Race Night at the Hall on Saturday May 14th at 7.30pm. This was a new venture for us as we feel that with such a wonderful new hall, we should be offering a much wider range of activities on a more regular basis.
Just over 60 people turned up for this event and great fun was had by one and all especially as the evening warmed up! With the takings from the ticket sales, donations, bar profit, the sale and auction of the horses (well done Rob, Antonia …

March Weather

The weather in March this year should be headed sunny and
dry. Some say the driest since March 1953. I hadn’t started taking
records then, so I cannot validate that statement! Certainly, with a
total of 23.1mm (less than one inch in old money) it was the driest
month of any since April 2007. In other respects March this year
compared very well with that of 2009, which was also very sunny, and had
recorded the highest maximum temperature of any this millenium of …

Umborne & Shute Calendar 2012

We hope to produce an Umborne & Shute Calendar for 2012. So please make a note of any local  photos you already have or any you take over the next 10 months in the valley.

We will consider photos that show views or buildings from the area but also

photos of wildlife etc. taken in and around the area (please tell us
details of where, when photo taken etc).
The 2010 calendar was a bit limited on space for writing in the boxes – we
will use a different format …

Children’s Christmas Party

The Christmas Party for all the children of the local area, is held in the hall in early December. This year, 2010,  the date is December 4th from 3 to 5 pm.

This party event was started about 10 years ago by Sheila, Gill and Angela and in the early days there were about 20 children having fun and games in the hall. All 23 Cider makers were from an area bounded by Chideock in the east, Stockland to the north & Sidbury to the west. The resulting range of ciders gave an indication of the effects …

Steam up at Penventon, Shute

The “Steam-up” is an annual event held early summer in the grounds of Liz and Tony Gosling’s house, Penventon, in Shute. This is a whole family occasion and the great attraction is the opportunity to have a ride on Tony’s miniature steam train as it huffs and puffs around the immaculate gardens of the house. Liz provides her famous Devon cream teas. There is a raffle and ice cream and cakes are also on sale. Children can  be amused with Rob’s giant “noughts and crosses” and “splat the rat”. This year, …

Last Night at the Old Hall

This was the very last event at the old hall and it took place on Friday 26th February 2010 and what an amazing final night at the village hall it was! Eleanor had arranged a “Soup and Pudding” night which is always a popular event. We really sent the old building off in style!  There were about 116 yes, your eyes did not deceive you – 116 people packed into the hall – some of whom we have not seen for ages- and boy was it busy!

We think we …
