We had a hugely successful Harvest Supper on Saturday 22nd of October
with 65 of us gathered in the hall for a wonderful meal ( thanks Liz & and all those people who contributed something salad-wise or in the pudding department.) What a banquet!
The table quiz of pictures and anagrams was won by the super-intelligent Trenchard family with a tiny bit of help from Bandy Woman (anagram!).
The raffle prizes seemed to be the best ever – hence a profit of £138 – well done …

October started with a continuation of the abnormally fine
weather that concluded September, and the maximum temperature of 25.4C
on the 1st made this the seventh highest reading of the year.
Thereafter the mild and dry conditions continued for three weeks,
yielding a total rainfall of just 6.3mm. As soon as we went away ( and our thanks to Ann and Chris for keeping the recordings going), the
rains began, with the last ten days having some recorded rain on all but
one of them. Even so, at 67.5mm. the total was probably 3/4 of what …

Umborne Institute Hall
Annual Report
The report this year is dominated by the demolition of the old hall & construction of this new building & the related events during this period.
At the last AGM, the decision to proceed with a new hall build was confirmed although at that time, when taking into account funds raised by the community (£38,000), & the Grants awarded by the CCD & EDDC (£27,000), the budget showed a deficit of over £20,000. To meet this deficit the Umborne Bond Scheme was launched. This scheme run under FSA …

September Weather in Umborne.
The abiding memory of September 2011 will be the
final few days with their remarkable warmth and unbroken sunshine. On
the 29th, the maximum temperature of 26.6C made this the third highest
value of the year. The next highest (26.0C) occurred on September 2nd,
and in this way September mirrored the entire summer season; two
wonderful days to start, rather in the way that March and April were.
Then, just the occasional good day surrounded by fairly average to less
so conditions, just like the ‘summer’ months, and then …

Working party & BBQ
We are planning to hold another work-in at Umborne Hall this coming Sunday (2nd Oct) from 3pm. The weather forecast looks excellent so we thought that we would do about 3 hrs of painting the outside of the hall and finishing the posts and rail by the stream. At about 6pm we would light the BBQ (Rob providing) and eat and have a few drinks till whenever. For the work aspect please bring work clothes and your favourite paint …

August completed the picture of a poor summer. Everybody,
nationwide, has been commenting on the lack of sunshine and sustained
settled weather, and the statistics have borne this out. Actually,
August started ‘well’ with the 2nd proving a warm day with the month’s
maximum temperature of 26.8C. Coincidentally, the same date last year,
saw that month’s highest of 25C!. During the month, there were a
handful of warm days when strong sunshine was able to make an impact,
but far more memorable were three dismal days in the second half …
